Abstract

ntroduction: Constipation is a common intestinal disorder that impacts people of all ages, affecting their well-being and quality of life. Given the need to find accessible and less invasive therapeutic alternatives, beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) stands out as a promising option due to its high content of dietary fiber and bioactive compounds. Methodology: A narrative literature review was conducted, focusing on studies addressing the therapeutic potential of beetroot in digestive health and its possible role in the management of constipation. The literature search was performed during the first half of 2026 using the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, SciELO, and Google Scholar. Results: The findings compiled in this narrative review support the therapeutic potential of beetroot as a functional alternative in the management of constipation. Its richness in dietary fiber and bioactive compounds such as betalains, polyphenols, and caffeic acid contributes to improving intestinal motility, preserving the integrity of the colonic mucosa, and reducing inflammatory markers associated with digestive disorders. Furthermore, its mild laxative effect and ability to modulate the intestinal microbiota are notable, reinforcing its usefulness as a non-invasive dietary supplement. Conclusion: Although preclinical and observational studies offer promising results, more clinical evidence in humans is needed to consolidate its efficacy and establish precise recommendations regarding dosage, method of consumption, and duration of treatment
